Ansett Mandated Air Lines (M.A.L.)

Ansett Airways was founded in February 1936 when R.M. Ansett was forced to discontinue his bus service between Melbourne and Hamilton in Victoria by the Victorian Transport Board as a railway protectionist measure. Meanwhile the activity in the goldfields of New Guinea led to the formation of a number of airlines to supply the interior from Australia. One of these was Mandated Airlines which was also formed in 1936. Civil flying in New Guinea was disrupted during the Second World War as Japanese forces all but overran New Guinea. Mandated Air Lines restarted flying in 1945. Ansett took over Mandated Airlines in 1961 and operated as Ansett M.A.L. throughout PNG.

The flights below came from the ’64 timetable from www.timetableimages.com .

These routes were flown using DC-3s for most of the routes. The leg from Port Moresby to Lae was flown using the DC-6 as the final leg of services from Australia to PNG. Other aircraft used by Ansett MAL included the Piaggio 166, Cessna 185, Cessna 337, Noorduyn Norseman, DHC-4 Caribou and Bristol 170. Before the war Mandated Airlines used the DH.83 Fox Moth and DH.84 Dragon in New Guinea.

Due to the sparsity of original airfields from flightsim we have two flights which follow routes to and from Lae.

Flight Simulator Files

While most of the aircraft used by Ansett MAL are available at flightsim.com, the only texture files that I know of are for a DC-3 in FS2002.
