Great Northern Airways '69

Great Northern Airways operated scheduled and contract flights from Whitehorse North as far as Sachs Harbour in the Arctic from the late '60s to '72, with DC-3s, Piper Aztecs, Lockheed L-188 Electras and Fokker F-27s.

As DC3 Airways will be running their annual World Rally in the next couple of months, this seems a good opportunity to practise our DC-3 flying and the following routes also include the radio frequencies for the NDB and VOR tramsitters for each airport.

These routes were taken from a timetable for October 1969.

In the timetable there is a stop for Clinton Creek in the Yukon, but this is missing from Flight Simulator, so we have included Eagle instead. It lies across the border, but at least it has a radio beacon for us to practise dialling in.

Flight Simulator Files

The default DC-3 is not a particularly accurate model of the flight dynamics of the DC-3.  We have a DC-3 available on the Hangar page that Tom Goodrick has "breathed on" to sort the flight dynamics for FS9.

You can also find a modified default DC-3 for either FSX or FS9 with alternative panels by Norm Hancock at the DC3 Airways website www.dc3airways.com.

There is a replacement model for the default DC-3 which has been produced by Manfred Jahn for both FS9 and FSX.  It is available from www.flightsim.com in C47BASEPACK.ZIP for FSX and c-47_basepack_fs9.zip for FS9.

For payware, there is the MAAM DC-3 available for FS9 with FSX basic compatibility.

There are no texture sets for Great Northern Airways, but Buffalo Airways, Air North and Northwest Territorial Airways have covered the same territory and texture sets for the various DC-3s above can be found on www.flightsim.com.

There is a Piper Aztec for FS9 on FlightSim by Fred Choate in either aztec_v3.zip or aztec_v4.zip. There is no Aztec for FSX but there is a more modern Piper Seminole for both FS9 and FSX in pa44.zip by Rien Cornelissen.
