Bluegrass Airlines, July 2010

’58 South Africa Domestic Routes

by Allan Lowson

As the 2010 is heading towards the Final on July 11th we will take a look a couple of the domestic routes of South African Airways (SAA) from 1958. Routes 1 and 2 connect Johannesburg and Cape Town and take in the locations of six of the World Cup stadia.  The remaining four stadia in the North of South Africa can be linked with a special charter from and back to Johannesburg, so we’ve set that up too.

In the Union of South African Major Millar formed a private company in 1929, Union Airways, to provide air services between Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Johannesburg predominantly for mail transport. These services started with de Havilland Gipsy Moths and were later supplemented by Junkers F.13s and W.34s. Union Airways was bought by South African Airways, a government concern, as a subsidiary of South African Railways in 1934. In 1937 SAA participated in the Empire Air Mail service and from this grew the airline routes to Europe.

The timetable routes come from www.timetableimages.com

The Cape Town to Johannesburg inland Route 1 was served for the flights below by DC-4 Skymaster aircraft, as were flights SA317 and SA324 from Route 2 which runs down the coast. Flight SA323 from Port Elizabeth down to Cape Town used the DC-3.

In 1958 SAA also flew a direct service along Route 1 between Cape Town and Johannesburg with Constellations.

In addition SAA also had de Havilland Dove aircraft, and these and the DC-3 are probably the most appropriate for the charter round the Northern airfields.

The SAA DC-4 is contained in Jens Kristensen’s dv4_v21.zip for both FS2004 and FSX.

The DC-3 for SAA is covered by dc3saa.zip for the default FS2004 DC-3 and maamsaak.zip for the MAAM-SIM DC-3 from flightsim.com.

A scheme for the de Havilland Dove for SAA is available from flightsim.com in saa_dove.zip.
