DC-3 flights in the northern half of
Alaska
The DC-3 built Alaska,
so now why not fly the routes that the airlines of the time, flew. These included; Alaska Airlines, Wiens Alaskan Airlines, Interior Airways and Reeves
Aleutian Airways to name a few. The
following are the routes that these airlines flew with DC-3’s:

A suggestion for the approach to Bettles is when you get within
20 nm ease over left to the river.
This will get you through the MSA without any problems, watch your ADF
for 7 degrees and turn for the runway.
The leg for Deadhorse is going to require
climbing to about 9500’ to clear the Brookes
Range. For fun try this one both in the summer and
winter.

The next one that I will spring on you is to Russia. Bet you didn’t know that they flew and still
do, a freight run to Provideniya Bay. This is flown by NAC – Northern Air
Cargo. The flight actually starts in Anchorage,
but since we are, in this exercise, flying north of V452, we will start in Kotzebue. There are
several approaches that you can try; the winds dictated RWY 19 for me. So with that, as you get within 20 miles or
so, you will notice a bay just to your right, follow it in and around to the
left. As you run out of water following
the ADF (960) in, work your way through a couple of valleys and as they say in
French Voila! there is the grass strip. The other approaches are too easy.
