The route for the GAAR 2009 starts from where the GAAR 2007 finished - Darwin (YPDN) - in Australia's "Top End".  The event has know established a cult following with aviation enthusiasts generally, with many a "plane spotter" lining airport boundaries looking for that "special" photo opportunity.

The event starts with a couple of casual Flight Legs across to Arnhem Land and Melville Island to ease us into the routine of VFR and VOR / NDB navigation.  As a result of the event's popularity, the Government of East Timor has requested we include their national airport at Dili as part of the event schedule and as an opportunity to assist with humanitarian aid efforts by delivering whatever additional cargo that can be "squeezed" into participants' aircraft.  Consequently, the next two Flight Legs involve the longest Legs and the over water Legs of the event to and from Dili.

Returning to the mainland, the route "wings" its way down through the "Kimberley", "Pilbara", "Gascoyne", "Mid-West" and "Goldfield-Esperance" regions of Western Australia stopping off at some of the major mining areas of the state including the famous Kalgoorlie gold mining town.  We then push on across the "Wheatbelt" region to Perth against the famous "Fremantle Doctor", finishing at Perth's general aviation airport, Jandakot.

The Reporting Dates for each Flight Leg are detailed in the table below.  PIREPs for each Flight Leg must be received by 2359 hrs UTC on the date indicated.  Any late PIREPs will result in a "withdrawn" being recorded against the entrant.  PIREPs can be submitted in advance of the required Reporting date.  All details regarding PIREP submission are under the "PIREPs" link.
