Bluegrass Airlines

July 2006

This month we are going to fly a virtual American Barnstormer’s Tour while the “real” one is taking place.

The navigation information supplies is not for “real world” use, but intended for use with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004.  All flights are VFR using nice weather.  I have Golden Wings and am using Golden Wings Nice Day weather.  The winds are from the north at 8 knots and there are scattered clouds.

Flights 2 and 3 are following the official course.   The official course for all other flights is not known yet.

Navigation is mostly via highways or rivers.  While flying I have www.local.live.com  open and view the map of the area I am flying over frequently to identify landmarks.  I have taken 97 screenshots to aid in your navigating the tour. Click on the thumbnails for flights 2-8 to see a large image.

After taking off fly a heading of 300 deg to intercept IL Route 26 north of Freeport.  IL-26 becomes WI-69  After you pass New Glarus WI, WI-92  branches toward the north to Mt Horeb.  In my version of Flight Sim (Golden Wings FS 9) I didn’t see the junction, but WI-69 became WI-92.  North of Mt Horeb the road becomes WI-78.  The Wisconsin River is visible not long after you pass Mt Horeb.  Follow the river to the north east.  (At Portage the river turns to the west and Wisconsin Dells.   After flying over the Dells (easy to spot as there is a highway bridge and a railroad bridge angling to the north west), turn south.  The airport is 5 miles away.

Flight 7 KDLL-KAUW July 23th  departing at 9am

This is a short flight following the Wisconsin River north all the way to Wausau.  I installed the smoke feature on my Waco ATO and put on a little show at Wisconsin Dells.  I planned on doing a loop, but stalled at the top.  So I guess it turned out to be an Immelman.

If you want to smoke it up, add these lines to your aircraft.cfg   Then press I to turn smoke on or off.

Flight 8 KAUW-KOSH July 25th  departing at 9am

This is our last flight, and it will get us to Oshkosh in time for the EAA AirVenture 2006.

Departing Wausau, turn to 144 deg and climb to 3,500’. The first waypoint is Waypaca Municipal  KPCZ  (NDB PCZ  382.0)  Distance is 45nm.

Over Waupaca turn to 180 degrees and fly to Green Lake 30nm.  Plan to arrive at Green Lake at 1,800’

North of Green Lake turn east and follow the railroad tracks to Ripon.  Reduce airspeed to 90 knots, turn on landing lights and lower gear if retractable.  At Ripon follow the tracks heading north east.  Stay over the tracks until over Fisk and contact KOSH tower for landing instructions.

During Airventure all VFR aircraft approach via Ripon to Fisk.  There is a mobile VFR unit stationed at Fisk, identifying and sequencing the aircraft.

The information on this web-site is not for use by anyone flying a real aircraft to Oshkosh.  Visit the EAA Airventure website and download the Airventure NOTAMS provided.
